Nothing about this appointment is luxurious and we have stopped trying to make it sound so. It is an hour, a camera, a dermatoscope and a consultant who has looked at a great many moles. It is also, by a distance, the most valuable thing on this page.
How it runs
Total-body photography in a standard set of poses first, which gives us the map. Then dermoscopy of every lesion that meets criteria — asymmetry, border, colour variance, structures that should not be there — with each one captured at 20x against its own reference frame.
Dr Wren reads the set and writes to you within five working days. Where something needs watching, you get the image and the specific thing being watched, so a three-month review is a comparison and not a fresh opinion.
If something needs to come off
We will say so plainly, in the room, with the reasoning and the image on screen. Excision is done here under local anaesthetic, sent for histology, and quoted before we book it — typically £480 to £690 depending on site and closure. Histology is £140 and is never optional, because an excision without a report is a scar with no information attached.
Urgent findings do not wait for the letter. You get a call.
Why we photograph before we watch
A mole described as “a bit bigger” is an opinion. A mole photographed at the same distance in the same light twelve months apart is a measurement. The entire value of this appointment is that it converts the first thing into the second.
